Reading the book of Numbers can be hard going. It’s not top of the list of books we would choose for a Bible study because of… well… all the numbers!
After the initial chapters we might want to stop reading; but the experience of God’s people on their way to the promised land, narrated in the middle sections, sounds very much like the way we often live here and now. Even though God has given us so much, we find ourselves living as if He doesn’t exist and grumbling about our lot. Liz Cox, our main speaker, will teach us from the Israelites’ experience so that we might trust, obey, and be more grateful to God for all that He has done.
We’d love you to join us in Stockton-on-Tees as we look at God’s word together. There are seminars for you to choose from: deepening our understanding of the Holy Spirit in the Bible; making sense of the suffering we experience in our own wilderness; or working through the Christian perspective on identity and gender.
We’ll respond to God as we sing His praises and reflect on what we’ve learnt in prayer. Throughout the day there will be time for us to chat over a hot cuppa and a croissant; or pop up to the 10ofthose bookstall to check out their latest bargains.
This day is a great opportunity to gather women from your church and travel to Stockton together to be nourished by God’s word and encouraged by the fellowship of your sisters in Christ, from across the northeast and beyond.
speaker
Liz Cox works as Associate Minister (responsible for Women and Community) at St Giles’ Derby. She moved to Derby from Sydney, Australia in 2004 with her husband David and their three children. Since then their family has expanded to include three children-in-law and five grandchildren. Liz likes drinking tea, watching films, cooking, and eating out. Most of all she enjoys talking, and especially talking about the Bible.
Seminars
(choose one)
Bringing the Holy Spirit into focus
When the Holy Spirit crops up in the Old Testament (like in Numbers 11) the references can confuse and wrong-foot us. He can seem distant or different from the New Testament Spirit. In this seminar we’ll seek to use all of God’s Word to expand our understanding, gratitude, and praise for the Holy Spirit.
Laura lives in Newcastle with her family and loves being part of Jesmond Parish Church. She’s recently finished studying a Masters in Christian Ministry and enjoys using lots of what she’s learnt in real life. Laura loves buying books that she can’t wait to read but… she is less good at finishing them!
Truth and love
Our children are growing up in a world of individual identity, that is increasingly rooted in sexuality or gender. We are told that a Biblical world view of God’s good design for men, women, and marriage is harmful and bigoted. Truth and love are often seen as opposites. How do we love our children and young people well and communicate truth to them?
Julie is based in Basingstoke with her husband and three (almost grown up) children. She has over 20 years’ experience as a community paediatrician but now works for a charity that equips others to teach children about sex and relationships from a Christian perspective. Having been involved in young people’s work her whole adult life, she’s enthusiastic about supporting them as they navigate the challenges of growing up in today’s society. In her spare time she can usually be found in a coffee shop or in the gym!
Groaning but growing
Through her own experience of suffering Barbara has thought long and hard about how, as believers, we can understand and respond to it. We’ll look at what the Bible has to say about why God allows us to suffer, and how, as His children, we can still trust Him when we do. Barbara now lives in central London and belongs to St Andrew’s Church where she loves to teach the Bible. She and her husband James lived for many years in Africa and they continue to help train leaders in churches there, in understanding and teaching God’s Word. She loves spending time with her family, walking in the great British countryside or curling up with a good book and good coffee.
